In October 2002, the peaceful lives of Antoli’s villagers were disrupted by the unusual behavior of a young leopard that frequently visited the village at night. Instead of hunting for food or attacking domesticated animals, the leopard showed a keen interest in a particular cow.
“The leopard comes closer… there is anxiety in the air,” described the Times of India in its heartwarming account. “The big cat slowly rolls over and raises one paw, placing it gently on the cow’s head and making purring sounds. The cow responds with a soft ‘moo’ and licks the leopard. The playful leopard sits there, waiting to be cuddled.”
As word spread, villagers gathered on rooftops to witness this extraordinary spectacle for themselves. Night after night, between 10 pm and midnight, the cow and the leopard did not disappoint, until the increased human presence made the leopard more cautious.
“We have been keeping watch, but unfortunately, the frequency of the leopard’s visits has decreased,” said Rohit Vyas, honorary wildlife warden of Vadodara at the time.
